BPP University Law School shortlisted for Yorkshire Legal Awards 2017

BPP University Law School is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for the Yorkshire Legal Awards in the Pro Bono Award category for the second year in succession.

The pro bono team in BPP University Law Schoolā€™s centre in Leeds has been acknowledged for its innovation and creativity in the delivery of its ā€˜Streetlaw sessionsā€™; a series of innovative workshops and interactive sessions with over 1,200 young people aged 9-18 in the Yorkshire area. These sessions utilise a selection of live case studies, including an attempted murder case and even putting Goldilocks on trial against the three bears (!), with the objective of increasing understanding about law and the legal process amongst young people.

The Team, consisting of two supervising solicitors, Emma Blackstone and Rachael Kirkup, Ā Ā supervise and coordinate law students drawn from BPPā€™s undergraduate, postgraduate and legal apprenticeships programmes who help to deliver the project.

On being nominated for the award, Emma spoke of her pride in the recognition of a project with such demonstrable impact on the local community. ā€˜As a team, our main objectives are to provide assistance to those who might not be able to access commercial legal services, and also crucially, to break down barriers for young people who may not have considered a career in law previously. Itā€™s a passion of ours to promote law as a diverse and inclusive profession.

We have already had outstanding praise and feedback for the project; with commendation from the Attorney General, receiving the Quality Mark for our teaching materials allowing the programme to be delivered in schools nationally, and fundamentally, from the schools we work with to deliver the project. To receive further recognition for our work in the form of this award nomination is thrilling, and another boost to the team here and the business as a whole.ā€™

The Yorkshire Legal Awards take place on 12 October at New Dock Hall, Leeds.
